On the days I struggle to find inspiration and the desire to trudge forward with my teaching, receiving letters like this make any doubts disappear. From Catalina, a recent "graduate", I want to thank you for your support during the months I joined the Prenatal Yoga Center. I loved your classes and Caprice’s and Ellyn’s. You gals have so much wisdom and brought peace when I was feeling tired and not confident. I wanted to share that I had back labor and although I didn’t know much about how bad that could be, I was able to utilize not only my hypnobirthing practice but a lot of the techniques you taught us in class- breathing, mantras, positions. I was able to make empowered decisions without shame. I am also glad I took the Pushing Power workshop because I ended up pushIng for 4 hours. My baby kept coming in and out... they believe he was sucking his thumb and that kept him from just coming out. My midwife kept commending me for my pushing but it was the position of the baby that was difficult. Believe it or not, I didn’t find the pushing that hard, I knew which muscles to use thanks to the exercises we did and thanks to my knowledge from Chantal’s class. The back labor was hard but the pushing was just long. I loved my pregnant experience and I loved my birthing experience and thank you for being part of it. Thank you for what you and everyone at Prenatal Yoga Center does for pregnant people. Three yoga poses that have felt especially good during my first trimester: skandasana, which I never liked practicing before and never teach because of how easy it is to go too deep or mess up your knee; downward dog, which I have never liked but cannot get enough of now; and standing twists, as twists on my back feel no good. I learned at my last doctors appointment that the only real restriction for pregnant people who have an active yoga practice is what doesn’t feel good in your own body. A few of the poses that feel amazing to me are typically seen as off-limits because of how much the body is changing. But as a hyper mobile yogi, I’ve spent years learning how to work muscle harder than my flexibility, so my joints are able to sustain the practice. In my body, getting upside down feels great in down dog, and standing twists give me the chance to really focus on alleviating the tension in my upper body, as opposed to squeezing my organs. Practicing through this pregnancy is sure a trip. I am not doing everything I loved before and miss, but that’s all in service of listening. If it’s what I harp to my students, it’s what I’ve got to do, too. I’m still teaching Tuesday nights in Woodstock and Wednesday nights in Richmond, both of which you can attend in studio or virtually. I plan to teach, at least locally, as long as my body is game.

Mula-bandha or root-lock is extremely beneficial in improving the strength of the pelvis, spine and the abdomen, can help to maintain the general health of the ovaries and uterus and thereby help in significantly improving the functioning of the female reproductive system. It is highly beneficial for improving fertility in women and is extremely helpful when practiced before conceiving. In men, this practice has been associated with relieving Spermatorrhea, preventing inguinal hernia, and controlling testosterone secretion . . . . . . . .

This morning Windsor wanted to see my belly. ⁣ ⁣ She immediately said “Oh! Mama got all pretty. Look, orange stripes on the belly!” ⁣ ⁣ If my new stretch marks delight her that much, they’ll just have to delight me too. I want to see myself through her sweet, innocent eyes. Because these stripes are proof that my body is in the middle of doing truly miraculous things. They are evidence that I am living my life richly, fully, purposefully. ⁣Evidence that I’m human. ⁣ As long as I live I will strive to only say good things about my body because she’s watching and listening. And one day if she wakes up with stretch marks for any reason at all I hope that she still feels every bit as beautiful as she thinks I am today. ⁣ ⁣

I stayed here in this pose with my foot on the ledge for a long time, wondering if I could actually take flight in a full Bird of Paradise pose, which was something that I loved and could easily have done before pregnancy. Heart openers ♥️ These postures fall into the love/hate category,  meaning you either love or hate them!  I used to hate them, but now I love them.  Especially being pregnant, I find heart openers give me that little extra space in my torso to continue making room for my growing little girl. ♥️ When I first started practicing, I definitely avoided the heart openers.  I quickly learned though, the days where I embraced them, I always feel better!  When I began to truly find my breath in class, I began to love my backbends.   ♥️ The lungs and heart openers go hand in hand.  The more you can use your full lung capacity to create space between your vertebrae the more room you have for spinal compression--ie a deeper backend. ♥️ TIPS FOR BACKBENDS: ◇Backbends require you to breath--work to slow your breath (inhaling for at least a count of 4, exhaling for at least a count of 4.) use your FULL lung capacity.  Slowing your breathe down will also activate the parasympathetic signaling to your muscles it is ok to relax.   ◇Backbends require to focus in--as you breath, envision your vertebrae.   Envision yourself rising out of your waist creating more space within your vertebral column. ♥️ I've been absent for a few weeks, but was excited to find some time to put something together for @naptimeshenanigans & @almayogalife

Ever since witnessing my beautiful badass teacher @kristenboccyoga move through her first pregnancy (now growing her 4th babe! 😍 Where in the world has the time gone?!) while running my 200hr teacher training (did I mention badass??), I knew someday I would gravitate toward this corner of the yogi universe. 🌻 Half camel pose 🌻 I’m curious - where are you guys from? I’m originally from Lithuania but we moved to London when I was around 6/7 years old so I consider myself more of a London girl than anything! 😂 I used to feel quite isolated due to this, as I didn’t necessarily ‘fit in’ with either nationality, but with time I’m finding more and more people in similar situations to me and I’m learning to disassociate from labels and accept myself for simply being me!
