Do NOT lower your standards to meet the expectations established by your BS programs!🤮. . Too many of us settle because we don’t think we are good enough to get something we want. . On the contrary, raise those mofos and stick to them. Constantly reminding yourself of your worth. ✨ . And once you have raised, draw a line in the sand and there is no going back. 🙅🏻‍♀️ . New standards means moving forward. ↗️ Not doing the cha-cha 💃🏽. .

Our autistic son often asks if I love him. I always answer that I love him very much and that he is great and that I enjoy his company. One day I asked why he so often asks although I tell him every day without him asking. He said that he feels invincible when I say I love him and that he likes to hear it before he has to do something difficult. Then he knows he can do it. Well...the soul that is loved, will allways flourish.

This week I had a conversation with my son. He explained to me that one moment he knows exactly what he wants in life and the other moment he has no idea. That sometimes he has no doubts at all and sometimes he constantly worries. I said he perfectly described Puberty. And that everyone his age has uncertainties. The trick is not to show that you have fears and doubts, so nobody can use it against you. Embrace your fears and you will be free forever.

When he was 7 he had 3 girls who wanted to be his girlfriend.... When he went to a special needs school when he was 10, the teacher said he would get a lot of attention from children, because he looked so good.... Some time ago someone asked me how he was doing and if he was still so beautiful.... Our autistic son never cared about his looks, but he is beautiful inside and out. Be happy, be bright, be you!

If I could turn back time..... Our autistic son loves to talk about the past. Much of his time has been lost due to fear. Fear of school and of social contacts with other children. Now that he is 17 years old and completely free of fear, he wants to make up for his lost time. View photos, retrieve stories, he can't get enough of it. Fear blocked him from enjoying life. He can see now, that there were a lot of things to enjoy...... When the mind is calm, everything becomes clear.

Every day our autistic son promises that he will try to go to bed earlier. So far this has not been successful. Bad habits are hard to change. I have decided not to focus on him, but on myself. That's why I am starting with muscle strength training today. I am confident that one day he will succeed, because every day is another chance to change your life.

Our autistic son asked me: "why are people so difficult ?" He wanted to participate in a gaming server and was busy for one week to get an answer. I answered that people aren't difficult all the time. They can be difficult and easy, indifferent and enthousiastic, noisy and silent and so on. He said: "Just like the wind when I am running. It feels like silk on my face during summer, which I love, and like sand on my face on cold days." "That's right," I said, "let's have something to drink in the silky wind of summer."

My husband was a judoteacher and taught a group of children, that was passionate about judo. He presented the children and their parents the idea that he would go to Japan, the country of judo origin, with the children if they would continue to train like they did. They started to monthly put money aside and the children participated in the yearly big club action, where they sold judo items. When the children were about 17 years old, they went to visit Japan, they went to Tokyo Disney and they trained with a Japanese judoclub. He had given the children a dream and made it come true.

Our children always watched a cartoon series in which the people could control the elements water, earth, fire or air. Our autistic son always called it the power and he wanted the power over fire. He asked me which one was my power. I answered that my power is mental strength, which is all the powers combined.

Life's purpose is all about collecting special moments. Spending time together, playing cards, watching a movie, visiting a city, having a picknick, celebrating together, watching a sportmatch and talking, listening and laughing a lot. I am thankful for the many special moments I had and the many that will come.

I always wanted to succeed in the things I started. Thanks to my parents I could go study. After that I could get a job and build a business of my own. But for a long time I doubted if I could succeed in raising our autistic son. He was not capable to fit in society. And I couldn't imagine a life outside of society. Our son taught me that it is possible. I still believe in succeeding only.

I train myself every morning and evening to list in my head the things in my life that make me happy. I am amazed how much there is to be thankful for. I am getting better in it every day and my life gets better every day. For example I love the flowers in my garden.....and so much more

Because of nightly snacks like icecream and candy our autistic son gained a lot of weight in a short period of time until he saw his weight. He was shocked, because he has always been a thin boy and he wanted to stay thin. Then he limited his sugar consumption and in less than 2 weeks he lost 7 kg (245 oz.). It takes no effort at all to keep it this way, because his mindset is to stay thin. Life can be as simple as that. The next few weeks we can snack blackberries fresh from our garden. Be incredibly good to yourself, always.

I am so grateful that it goes so well with my children. We had a really tough time with our autistic son for years, but for quite a while already, it goes astonishing well. I try to figure out what caused the change. The only thing I can come up with is that I changed my mindset. Positive thinking only and no more worries, just the way I did when I was young....... I guess I remembered who I was and the game changed.

The self-learning capacity of our autistic son is impressive. He knows for example how to memorize things very well. We want to teach him to realize his dreams by believing in them, have the discipline to work for them and be patient if they take longer than expected. Make your life a happy life : Manifest your dreams!

When we had an autistic child, we knew nothing about autism and were inclined to take advice from professionals. But now, 17 years later, we can tell from experience that as parents you know much better than the professionals. The medical world sees autism as a disability and prescribes medication. Schools see autism as a disability and I quote: "place too much emphasis on the deficit and not enough on the strength" (Temple Grandin). We now think very differently about it. Our son has never done so well and never felt so happy as he does now. We cannot change the way the world sees autism, but we can keep thinking for ourselves.

When I was in my twenties, I saw a competition of a car brand, in which you could win a trip to Canada. I registered with my boyfriend, who is now my husband. I really wanted to go to Canada and I was sure we were going to win. First we had to put on paper why they should take us to Canada. Then we had to get through 2 selection days. We survived all 3 selection rounds. I was so sure all the time that they would choose us. Years later I read the book The Secret. I had done everything exactly as they described in the book. You were born to create, so create your perfect life.

A home is very important for our autistic son. He has no friends, no sport club, no school. He tried, but it didn't work. Almost everything he does in life takes place at home. Learning through home education, gaming on his computer at home with his cousin or brother. Listening to music, watching tv, jumping the trampoline, playing outside. Everything at home. As an exception, he runs 6k every day on the roads around our house. His favorite road definitely leads home.

Many of my family members have worked in the hotel business. I also started as a waitress in my student days. I have learned to be hospitable from an early age. I still am. When people visit us, I always want to give them enough to eat and drink. It was a good learning experience to go the extra mile for guests. It feels good to take good care of others and take good care of yourself. Yes....even to spoil yourself now and then. Live a life of abundance. Share abundantly, enjoy abundantly and love abundantly.

Someone wrote on Instagram: autism is not a disability, it's a different ability. I totally agree with that. All help is aimed at preparing as well as possible for "our" world, but what if we are completely wrong with that. That's why we let our autistic son develop in his own world now and we'll see where he ends up. It was a process for us to change our framework of thinking, because we cannot ask anyone. We just listen to silence and control our doom thoughts.

Very warm memories of a trip with my parents, my husband and my sisters to Indonesia. We had to get up at 3 a.m. to visit Mount Bromo in East Java. This photo reminds me of my mother who passed away. She always listened to her inner voice. I am grateful that she was my mother. When I got my autistic son I learned to listen to my inner voice, too. It brought me a lot.

This photo was made in the last century. 22 years ago I saw my first of the new 7 Wonders of the World: the Taj Mahal in India. A few years later I went to Rome and saw the Colosseum. I wish I can visit one of the other Wonders with my children. We can go to China to see the Great Wall of China. Or we can go to Petra in Jordan, Chichen Itza in Mexico, Machu Picchu in Peru or Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. I surely love to be amazed by Wonders.

Before we had children we loved to travel. We went to India and saw a fascinating piece of the world. We thought that when we had children we would take them on a journey and show them the world. That idea became impossible when we had an autistic son. We had to adjust our plans, but life is a journey and we do the utmost to get the most out of it.❤

In the Netherlands there was a homeopathic physician who did a lot of research on autistic children. He discovered that a lot of autistic children lack self-love with fear to be abandoned by the mother from fear not to deserve her love. To compensate that feeling they eat a lot of products with sugar. In our family it was candy, chocolate and tomato ketchup. The work of the physician inspired me to try to give our son a bulk packaging of love to give his confidence a boost , also when he acts impossible. Every day, all day long. We want him to see how amazing he is. It helps: the sugar consumption decreased enormously.

This photo was made by my sister who is on vacation in Italy with her family. We stay at home this year for the 4th year in a row and it feels great. The youngest is on the road with his friends in the city, the swimming pool, the gym or gaming. The oldest is at home on his computer and is connected to his cousin. My husband and I have 2 weeks off and are busy or relaxing in the garden. We all do our thing, far away from the holiday crowds. We do not expose our autistic son to the heat, the crowd, the lack of daily rhythm. You do not have to go anywhere to have a holiday feeling. Your mindset can give you your dream life.

I never had problems making choices until I had a child with autism. Then I found all choices difficult. I had to make choices for a child who does not meet the standards of society in order for him to participate in the system. He hated the system. The school with the rules, the methods for learning, the dress codes, the frustrations of other children. If I look back I would now make some other choices. I don't find it difficult anymore. I only make happy choices.

I have shared one of my blogs on an autism community on Facebook. In the blog I suggest to try to tell your kid a positive story of his/her life and future before going to sleep every night. Only positive words! In our family it resulted in a more reasonable, more understanding and happier autistic son. I have had more than 200 responses, including 20 people who wrote that they are going to try. The idea that someone benefits as much as my son, even if it is just 1 person, means a lot to me. I know the enormously bumpy road of families with 1 or more children with autism. I feel alive, because I have made the road less bumpy for someone.

Taking beautiful photos is a matter of patience. Especially when you take photos of birds. A few years ago our autistic son wanted to have a photo of this bird. He had spotted it at our hotel and wanted a photo up close. He succeeded because he has such a strong focus. This focus has often driven us as parents to despair. Children with a strong will are difficult to raise. Every bird sings its own song, so to speak. He only sings much louder than most of us.

It is difficult to stay cool with a heat wave, but water always provides cooling. Our autistic son does not come out during the day with the heat, but in the evening he goes for a nice swim. Nice alone in the garden, no people around him. Last night at 1 a.m. I heard something. He went swimming again. How privileged we are to live in an area on earth where there is no water shortage: water is gold

We have an incredible number of thoughts that go through our heads every day. The estimates vary between 40,000 and 60,000 thoughts per day. Meditation or breathing exercises help to navigate the flow of thoughts in the right direction: a positive one. Our autistic son does not want to meditate, but before he goes to sleep, I tell him a positive story about his life. It works for him when he falls asleep with positive thoughts. Running 6k every day also works well to calm his head. And living in a quiet environment among the deer is priceless for his busy mind.

Everything in a child's life should be about believing in oneself. Imagine that the only focus of every school, sportclub, music club, art club or any other club would be to make children believe in themselves. What kind of adults would we have in 20 years?

It is time for a tribute to brothers and sisters of children with autism. School was always a disaster, but at home our autistic son always had someone to play with: his little brother. And also someone with the same interests who always took into account his impatient character. Now his little brother is 15 and fully enjoying his life with friends. He is entitled to do that. He was the best friend and therapist his brother has ever had. That is why it is very appropiate to quote: thank you little brother. You were the shelter of my childhood.

When we went on vacation, we always had to have a swimming pool. Our autistic son always swam more under water than above water. 4 years ago the children had the opportunity to learn how to dive. A team of young divers had just started their business and offered guests to dive 1 day in the pool and 1 day in the sea for a small fee. Our children were the first customers. It was a wonderful experience.
