EXERCISE IN 1ST TRIMESTER I get asked this a lot as you've gone from exercising normally to suddenly having to think about how to move for 2 (or more!). A lot of people come to me and say they stopped training altogether as they were at a loss with what to do. In short, DON'T STOP MOVING! Just make sure you avoid the high risk exercises that are stipulated in guidelines, such as skiing, contact sports, diving etc. ▶️Top Tips for a Tip Top 1st Tri Training ◀️ 1️⃣Change your attitude towards training. If you were previously training for weight loss, that's the last thing we want at this stage as Gestational Weight Gain is important for development of your baby (your first trimester will be the slowest for this). Now training is about being strong to cope with the extra weight of a bump + labour, being able to adapt to changes in centre of mass and helping lessen the postural changes. 2️⃣The Talk Test. You know you're working hard enough when you can no longer maintain a conversation. Well, during pregnancy you want to be able to as that's a sign you're not pushing yourself too much. You want to work at no higher than 7/10 otherwise it takes away a large percentage of the baby's blood supply. Aerobic training shouldn't be overlooked. It's very important for odema, post natal depression and baby's health. 3️⃣Breathe. Obviously it's key to life but it's a good time to work on diaphragmatic breathing if you haven't already started thinking about the way your core is connected to your pelvic floor. 4️⃣Drink Up. Hydration is important so don't forget to take water breaks and decent rest period when training, especially if you feel yourself getting out of breath. ⚠️Please note the above is for anyone without any contraindications.
