When I was just 16 years old I started having HORRIBLE back pain from competitive figure skating. I could hardly sit or stand for any period of time, my back spasms would act up at all hours of the day, and I remember going to class with heating pads under my itchy catholic school uniform sweater. Popping 4 Advil a day was just standard if you’re falling on hard ice over and over while learning new jumps. No pain, no gain right? Well it got worse. My Junior year, when I was competing at the Junior level, and finishing off with a near undefeated season I had to withdraw from the biggest competition of the year. My back was sooo messed up I remember just crying in my hotel bed for hours. I knew something needed to change if I wanted to continue skating. After a lot of research my mom and I discovered the benefits of Pilates and strengthening my core. I was immediately hooked! It was incredible to see the amount of detail the instructors poured into each session. My body was responding so well and I FINALLY felt like someone understood me 🙏🏼 When I was strong enough to get back on the ice I vividly remember telling my mom on my first day back, “Wow! I feel like a column! I’m so strong on my jumps and everything just feels so right again!” I will forever be thankful for that feeling In fact I’m so grateful for what Pilates did for me on and off the ice that I wanted to share that experience with others! Back to basics!🙃🙈 I missed my morning yoga routine so much. After 3 months of no exercises my body is way too stif! 😖 Time to get my pregnancy shape back 💪 • It's been 2 months since my son was born. When I was pregnant I didn't realise (not even a thought) how difficult it is to keep your body in shape. 2 Favorite Feel Better Move Better activities I like to give clients as "homework" when they ask for stretches to help with achy backs, shoulders and hips. I like these because they are fairly simple to execute, can be done anywhere and it gives people what they want. To FEEEEL like they are stretching or “activating” a certain muscle. 90-90 Hip Lift This exercise is specifically designed to relax your low back while improving the posture and position of your hips and spine. The combination of proper position and exaggerated exhales works like a massage to calm your stiff and overworked low back, neck, shoulders and hips. 90-90 Key Points🔑 Lay on back with thighs and shins at 90 degrees, feet on wall Keep low back in contact with floor, think of melting into the floor Tuck your hips slightly, think bringing your belt buckle towards your nose Pull your heels DOWN into the wall. Find and feel your hamstrings Keeping shoulders and neck relaxed, inhale easily through nose Exhale through mouth Make exhale as long and drawn out as possible Hold breath for 2 seconds and repeat for 5-10 breath. Brettzel You get a nice glute stretch on the “up” hip, a nice hip flexor/quad stretch on the “down” hip, and some trunk rotation. Brettzel Key Points🔑 Lie on your side and rest your head on a pillow/pad as needed. Bring your top side leg up and over so that your knee is resting on the ground or a foam roller. Bend your bottom knee and use your top side hand to grab your bottom foot. Pull back slightly to get a bit of a stretch in the quad. Inhale gently and then exhale while rotating your upper back away from your top leg. Repeat this process 5-6 times, or until you run out of room to rotate. Make sure to exhale fully and keep the ribs tucked in throughout. You want that rotation coming from the upper back, not the lower back! Give them a shot and let me know if you have questions. - - -

I'm going to take a step back to healing the back I forgot about this, but as you can see I remembered. Place a block on a flat surface and relax while resting your upper back on the block. This feels amazing, and it's a relaxing resting position. Benefits: •Releases tension •corrects any hump in your upper back if you have a career that causes you to have your head and upper back bending forward, causing a hump in your back. An example would be a desk job, typing a lot, etc.

L O W E R B A C K P A I N ? 😣 Lately I have been speaking with allot of people and they all have something in common, their lower back hurts when doing certain exercises or even in their everyday life. So I have put together a small video sequence with the lovely @freya.spencer to show you some stretches you can do. I would advise that you do them first thing in the morning, a great addition to a morning routine. 1️⃣ - Cat/Cow Pose increases flexibility of the neck, shoulders, and spine. The movement also stretches the muscles of the hips, back, abdomen and chest. Cat Stretch held at its peak releases tension of the upper back and neck. 2️⃣ - Child's Pose helps to stretch the hips, thighs, and ankles while reducing stress and fatigue. It gently relaxes the muscles on the front of the body while softly and passively stretching the muscles of the back torso. 3️⃣ - Puppy Pose Stretches the spine, shoulders, upper back, arms and abdominal muscles. At a slight inversion, with the heart just higher than the head, this pose can foster a sense of calmness in the body, relieving stress and anxiety. Releases tension in you upper arms, shoulders, and neck. Expands your chest and opens up hips. Hold each exercise for about 30 seconds and transition in the next and flow back do 3-5 rounds and let me know how you feel after a week. This goes great with the warm up over on my @_zbandz page which I would advise to do first to loosen the back before going into this one. As with most back pain, poor posture plays a big role in middle back pain. When you spend hours sitting at your computer with rounded shoulders, the muscles in your back are forced to work overtime to support your shoulders and neck. They become so fatigued that when you go to lift a box or work out in the weight room, it's easy for that extra movement to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. To find correct posture, sit as tall as you can in your desk chair. Pull your shoulders back as far as they can, then come back a third. That's the sweet spot. (You can also incorporate these posture-improving exercises into your fitness routine)

Loved the feel of this deep yoga hamstrings and back body stretch - was even nicer in that 🌞 Its fantastic seeing so many peeps out walking & running lately many new to it keeping up they’re new year goals 👐 so want to remind runners some tips to keep injury free: • Build up running gradually - if your joints (not the muscles working hard good burn💪🏼) but if bones or joints hurt Stop - power walk instead you likely need to build strength in your core & lower body first (Pilates does this ; ) • Always warm up with at least a power walk first ideally then do some dynamic (moving stretches) before impacting your joints with the jogging/running. • Always Stretch afterwards to assist recovery, help reduce aches & pains & prevent injuries. Running tightens muscles & tight muscles pull us into undesirable postures causing back & hip pain. Tight muscles are prone to tear & trauma = injury. So don’t pick up an injury with your new year running resolution Keep run fit friends! Do lots of stretching & keep up or take up Yoga & Pilates 😉✊🏻🏃‍♀️🏃🏽🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️✨

Chest and back stretch: This pose seems so simple but it packs a big demand on your back and triceps. Stand with good posture: hips tucked, gaze straight ahead, shoulders up and back. Bring attention to your hands at your side palms facing your thighs. Bring your arms behind you again with palms facing your body and bring your arms about 45 degrees Hold this for 3 minutes and lower them. You will feel almost immediate fire heat up your back and deep into your shoulders and arms. This combats looking down at your phone and computer all day. This will also bring tons of heat into your arms so be mindful to relax your shoulders. . . . . . . .

Got spine stiffness? The spine is named in 3 sections, the middle of which is called the thoracic spine consisting of 12 vertebrae from the base of your neck to your low back. This portion of your spine commonly becomes stiff in positions of prolonged flexion, such as in sitting. Substantial stiffness in the thoracic spine can contribute to pain and dysfunction in surrounding structures such as the neck, low back, and shoulders 🚨. Try these exercises to help restore mobility in directions where you may be lacking🤙 1️⃣ open book thoracic rotation ✅ lay on your side with knees slightly bent and hands together ✅ gently rotate the top hand towards the ceiling and follow your hand with your eyes to rotate the head and neck as well ✅ try not to rotate your hips in order to isolate spinal motion 2️⃣ foam roll thoracic extension ✅ lay on your back and position foam roll around the bottom of your shoulder blades ✅ gently stretch over roll with hands behind head ✅ substitute a large towel roll for a foam roll if needed 3️⃣ kneeling thoracic extension stretch ✅ grab a stick, kneel down, place elbows on table about chest hieght ✅ sink hips towards heels and drop chest towards ground ✅ substitute hands behind head for a stick if needed 4️⃣ kneeling thoracic rotation stretch ✅ kneel on one knee with opposite knee close to a wall ✅ place a small ball or towel roll between your knee and the wall, this is used to create tension throughout the body and prevent compensations ✅ slowly rotate as much as you can in both directions.
