* Did you know that... ? * . The back of a painting can reveal many useful things about that particular artwork, its history, its artist and even its owners. Labels, inscriptions, inventory numbers all have a story to tell and are extremely helpful to understand the movement of the painting and to fill some historical gaps. . Sometimes it happens that the back of a painting reveals another painting. It doesn't happen very often but it does sometimes. 🔎But why painting an artwork in the back of a canvas? The explanation is that materials have historically been expensive, so some artists were known to try out different compositions on the same support. . 🔎 Last 6 February during the Impressionist and Modern Art Sale in London, @christiesinc sold an artwork by Camille Pissarro which had a second signed Pissarro on the back. In the front of the painting a scene with farmyard poultry, in the back two women who are painstakingly washing laundry on the bank of the river Oise. Both the scenes were painted in 1878 and are situated in Pontoise, a small rural town where Pissarro spent a lot of time. During the sale the artwork was exhibited in a special support to allow people to see both the sides. Having been estimated at £ 300,000 - 500,000, the realized price for this double-side artwork was of £ 347,250. . 🎨 Camille Pissarro, Poulailler a la maison rouge, Pontoise (recto), 1878, Oil on canvas, 32x40 cm 🎨🎨 Camille Pissarro, Laveuses au bord de l'eau, Pontoise (verso), 1878, Oil on canvas, 32x40 cm

"The Snake Charmer" Henri Rousseau 1907 oil on canvas 169 cm × 189.5 cm Musée d'Orsay . . . The Snake Charmer was commissioned by Berthe, Comtesse de Delaunay, the mother of artist Robert Delaunay. It was Rousseau's first large commission and was exhibited in the 1907 Autumn Salon. Because Rousseau never traveled outside of France, the exotic plants in the painting resulted from Rousseau's visits to the Jardin des plantes and from magazines. From 1922 to 1936, The Snake Charmer was in the collection of Jacques Doucet. It was promised to the Louvre in 1925 and became part of its collection in 1937. The painting has an asymmetric vertical composition with a detailed depiction of the jungle on the right and a woman playing the flute on the left, back-lit by moonlight from a full moon. A snake, charmed by the music, stretches horizontally across the painting. The Musée d'Orsay described the painting as "a black Eve in a disquieting Garden of Eden". Sylvia Plath's 1957 poem "Snakecharmer" and Willard Elliot's 1975 composition The Snake Charmer for Alto Flute and Orchestra were inspired by Rousseau's painting. The painting inspired Australian artist Brett-Livingstone Strong's painting Homage to Henri Rousseau which is recognisable as the album cover of the 1987 Fleetwood Mac album, Tango in the Night. . . .

"In the Conservatory" Édouard Manet 1878–9 oil on canvas 115 cm × 150 cm Alte Nationalgalerie, Berlin . . . The setting is a conservatory at 70 Rue d'Amsterdam in Paris, then owned by painter Georg von Rosen and which Manet used as a studio for nine months in 1878 and 1879. Such a conservatory may have been more than a greenhouse; French painter Alix-Louise Enault's Consolation depicted the Parisian conservatory as a "luxuriously decorated and intimate locale—a secluded indoor area conducive to private rendezvous".At first glance, we see a double portrait of a fashionable and attractive couple of some social rank. They are Manet's friends, the Guillemets, who owned a clothing shop. Their married status is conveyed by their rings, and the proximity of their hands is the nearest hint of intimacy. The woman becomes the focus of the portrait, however, being more prominently placed and colourfully dressed. Their physical separation—with the husband Jules slouching in dark clothing behind the bench—their lack of engagement with the viewer, and their abstract gazes create a sense of detachment, which has been the primary theme in modern criticism of the work. . . .

The Jockey of Artemision In the fall of 1928, the fragmentary bronze statues of a horse, a boy, and a god were retrieved from a sunken ship near Cape Artemision. After much study and restoration, the horse and boy were paired together as a single sculptural group. The features of the horse and rider, and all of the study and debate that surrounds them, make a wonderful study of Hellenistic bronze and where it is similar to and different from Classical Greek statuary. The pair is captured in a moment of high drama. The horse has two legs lifted far off the ground, giving the impression that he gallops at full speed. His wide eyes, flattened ears, and exaggerated veins vividly show his strain. His wide nostrils, parted mouth, and lolling tongue almost enable the viewer to see him panting and frothing as he pushes through to the end of the race. The boy sits astride his horse, his body leaning close to the animal’s neck to counterbalance the horse’s bounding gait. In one hand he grips a fragment of the preexisting reins while the other hand is poised to hold a whip or crop. The drapery of his simple clothing and the locks of his hair flutter freely in the wind. His mouth hangs slack and open, showing his exhaustion to match that of the horse. Here, the bronze acts as a very expressive medium. The metallic sheen of his skin and the hide of the horse give off the appearance of glistening sweat. The boy’s full lips and broad nose are taken by many scholars to be an indication of Ethiopian descent. This magnificent sculptural group always captures my imagination. It’s an example of stupendous artistic achievement.

. 🌼🌼 Estado actual: 🔹(

Since I was a child I dreamed of Money’s garden. It was so poetically described and depicted in this book my mother gave me for my 10th birthday. I even wrote a paper about it for school. My first art-historical text! Because the garden of my imagination meant so much to me, I have always felt reluctant to visit the real one, convinced it could only mean dissapointment. Even when I found myself in Giverny for a courier trip to the museum , I stubbornly refused to go. Until the end of the last day, an hour before closing. I sudddenly rushed from the terrace to the gates and entered. And it was wonderful.

🇬🇧 In the summer of 1889, Munch rented a small house in Åsgårdstrand, a small Norwegian town near the Oslo Fjord already a holiday resort for several citizens and artists in the nearby city. Munch became very attached to the town, which began to be the background to many of his paintings including "Inger on the beach”. The painting depicts Inger, Munch’s young sister, sitting alone on the granite rocks of the Åsgårdstrand Reef, Norway. Its white diaphanous dress is in stark contrast with the greyness of the stones and with the blue and purple tones of the sea water behind her. The scene is set in the summer, as suggested by the original title of the painting (Summer night) and by the warm and diffused light that pervades the scene, typical Northern July night light. This painting was preceded by a series of studies that Munch did between 9 and 11 at night to study the bright qualities of norwegian summer nights. ⬇️ read more in the comments⬇️

The 17th century 'Cornish Giant' Anthony Payne was 7 feet 4 inches (2.24 metres) tall—and this painting of him is life-sized! Charles II commissioned this painting by Godfrey Kneller, the leading portrait painter of his day. It was likely a gift to Sir Bevill Grenville's son. Sir Bevill was a royalist and led Cornish soldiers in the Civil War. Payne was the personal retainer to Sir Bevill and was present at the battle of Lansdown when Sir Bevill was killed. _ 'Anthony Payne (c.1612–1691), the Cornish Giant' by Godfrey Kneller (1646–1723) 📸 @cornwall_museum (CC BY-NC).

"Paysage au Rangkong" Alexandrine Kelder 1964 oil on canvas 67 cm x 93.5 cm. Private collection . . . Born in 1903, Alexandrine Kelder grew up during the 1920s and was inspired by the artistic atmosphere of the time. The notable innovations formed in the early years of the 20th century were developed further in the 1920s and 1930s. This period established the careers of many innovative and inspiring practitioners in the pictorial arts. However it was a time of reflection following the horrors of the First World War, and major shifts in politics took place internationally. The philosophy of Marxism was prevalent among artist communities and groups. In Paris, artists such as Brancusi, Modigliani and Soutine developed methods of art which were dramatic and dynamic. Surrealism continued to mature in the 1920s and 1930s, and focused on the human unconscious and Freudian theory. Important artists to arise from this movement were Salvador Dali, Giorgio de Chirico, Andre Breton, Rene Magritte and Paul Delvaux. Surrealism spread as an ideology on a global scale due to its cultural significance, and grew to become the integral expressive mode of the 1920s. It was aided by the liberal characteristics of Weimar Republic in Germany, and flourished under this way of thinking. . . .

This is a 16th century teakwood dwarapalaka also know as temple guardians from central part of Kerala . Basically The tradition of building and carving in wood has always been popular in Kerala. It has also retained its creative vitality for a long period as is clear from this lively and pleasing figure of a ‘dwarapalaka’ or temple guardians . Generally, temple guardians are more solemn imposing figures who strike more reposeful postures. But in the south they are sometimes shown as dancing, as is suggested by the posture and gestures of this guardian. Despite the fact that he is enmeshed in twisting and interlocking jewelleries of all kinds and swirling scarves and tassels, his powerful form is not obscured nor his vigour diminished. He wraps his plump left leg around his club, the toes resting on the hood of a cobra. His right arm swings across his chest and the bent left arm is held up. The gestures of both hands are exquisitely graceful, and his face with bulging eyes and open mouth is expressive. DM FOR MORE DETAILS..!!!

Reposted from @art.infinitus Gustav Klimt Field of Poppies, 1907 Gustav Klimt (July 14, 1862 – February 6, 1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter and one of the most prominent members of the Vienna Secession movement. Klimt is noted for his paintings, murals, sketches, and other objet d'art. Klimt's primary subject was the female body, and his works are marked by a frank eroticism. In addition to his figurative works, which include allegories and portraits, he painted landscapes. Among the artists of the Vienna Secession, Klimt was the most influenced by Japanese art and its methods.

𝓢𝓾𝓭𝓵𝓮𝔂 𝓗𝓸𝓾𝓼𝓮 (part 4 / 10) IN A CONVENT GARDEN Date unknown George Dunlop Leslie (1835 - 1921) ✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨✨ Very little is known about this painting (even Sudley lists no information about it!).The artist was born into a creative family. His father was a renowned genre painter, whilst his uncle travelled during The Age of Sail and painted marine subjects. Leslie tended to focus on domestic scenes and was heavily influenced by the Pre-Raphaelites. He was a member of the St John’s Wood Clique, alongside artists like William Frederick Yeames (see my post from 30th July on Yeames’ masterpiece ‘And When Did You Last See Your Father?’) 👦🏼 In this painting, Leslie depicts a young woman picking flowers in a convent garden. Her escoffion-inspired headdress aligns with the medieval elements frequently found in Pre-Raphaelite imagery. In the centre, a white tulip visually pierces the scene. It is symbolic of chastity and spiritual love. Beside it, red tulips bloom and a lute lies on the ground. Both the red flowers and musical instrument are indicative of romantic ardour 🌹 The woman clasps a red and white tulip, underlining a personal conflict between passion and purity. She is torn between earthly love and her devotion to God, highlighted by a nun walking towards her whilst clutching a prayer book - perhaps approaching to reorient her onto a path of piety ⛪️ Four aspects suggest the nun’s instruction will be futile: 1. The woman has only selected red tulips for the vase. 2. The woman attempts to hide the vase and lute from monastic view by placing them on the ground, shielded by the low brick wall. 3. The red tulips that surround the woman significantly outnumber the white tulips. 4. The woman wears a red girdle that is wrapped securely around her waist. She appears to have already succumbed to desire ❣️ ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ ▫️ ▫️
