The Château Frontenac Fairmont was initially constructed by William Van Horne of the Canadian Pacific Railway as a stopover site for travelers. He enlisted American architect Bruce Price for its design. The center tower seen here was added during an expansion several years after initial construction. The site has famously hosted politicos, celebrities, and royals. In 1943 and 1944 the hotel complex hosted the Quebec Conferences of allied powers resulting in the ultimate planning of D-Day. And the views at any time of day are breathtaking. . . . . .

After being cut off from allied supplies and being surrounded by the enemy, the first battalion(commanded by Charles Whittlesey) and the second battalion, commanded by Captain George McMurty, were trapped with no food, water and ammunation. McMurty was a experienced soldier who already fought in the Spanish-American war. After taking Hill 198 the first day on the 2nd of October 1918, they lost it again the next day. With the German fire coming from all direction, the men were shot, wounded and killed in big numbers. On the 4th of October a American recon plane flew by and thought the position of the Battalions were German and so ordered allied artillery to target at them. One of the soldiers in the Battalion was Private Omar Richards who was the pigeon handler. All pigeons trying to inform the Americans about the situation were all mowed down by German fire, there were only 2 pigeons left, one of them was called Cher Ami, French for “Dear Friend”. Whittlesey wrote a message, "We are along the road parallel to 276.4. Our own artillery is dropping a barrage directly on us. For heaven's sake stop it" and attached it to Cher Ami’s leg. Captain Richards released Cher Ami. It flew around and landed on a tree opposite of Richards and Whittlesey. The two men yelled and screamed at it. Finally the bird flew away. 25 minutes later the pigeon landed at headquarters and the allied bombing stopped. On the way to the headquarters Cher Ami was shot through the chest, blinded on 1 eye and almost lost a leg what was hanging under him what had to be amputated later. After that the Americans began dropping supplies in the position. The Lost Battalion Part 2.

SOVIET BETRAYAL OF THE HOME ARMY: FINAL PART . ‘Wacław Beynar, a former Home Army partisan, was arrested in 1948 and found himself in an airless cell in the Rakowiecka prison in Warsaw. So humid was the cell that prisoners, among them many veterans of the Warsaw Uprising, removed their shirts and waved them in the air to create the illusion of a breeze. There was no toilet in the cell, and prisoners were taken out to use one only twice a day, a system that quickly became a form of torture for those who got diarrohea from the prison food. During interrogations, Beynar was beaten “primitively”, hit in the face, kicked in the iside, and given a death sentence, which he heard “with neutrality: I just couldn’t believe it, that I’m a criminal”. . ‘Eventually Beynar was reprieved, given a long prison sentence, and sent to Wronki, a much larger prison near Poznań that held some 4,000 mostly political “criminals”. Upon arrival, “we all cried like children”, he remembered, though the prisoner who suffered most was one who had been in the camp at Dachau. To him it felt simply like déjà vu. Another fellow prisoner was Stanisław Szostak, arrested along with General Wilk outside Vilnius in 1944, then rearrested in Szczecin in 1947 and immediately thrown into a cell with Nazi collaborators. Wronki, he recalled, was “full of lice, lacked air, was hot in the summer and cold in the winter”. Both he and Beynar would be freed only in 1956. Lublin Castle, a forbidding medieval structure that had been used as an emergency prison and execution site for Home Army soldiers in 1944 and 1945, also remained open until 1954. Its gloom, dirt and silence were thought to increase prisoners’ terror.’ . ~ Anna Applebaum

The Mitsubishi A6M "Zero" was a long range fighter produced by Mitsubishi and operated by the IJN from 1940 to 1945.🔶 — It was known as the "most capable carrier based fighter aircraft in the world" when it was introduced early in WW2 because of its truly amazing maneuverability and very long range.🔶 — Until mid-1942, the Zero had a dogfighting ratio of 12-1, until new allied tactics and equipment enabled allied fighters to engage the zeroes on pretty equal terms.🔶 — By 1943, new American fighters were faster, better armed, and more armored than the zeroes, but still not as maneuverable. With production delays of newer Japanese fighters, the zero fought until the end of the war, and even was adapted to carry out kamikaze missions in the Pacific.🔶 — Overall, the Zero was an amazing fighter that had its magnificent high point in its career until being superseded by newer fighters. —

Today’s project with Jose A. Fernandez III and Bradley Otellio is, perhaps, a bit controversial. This 1939 Mercedes G4 is one of 57 built for the German Army. It’s also the very car that Hitler used to observe German troops on the front lines of their invasion of Poland that marked the start of World War II. This car is, then, a small part of one the darkest and most tragic events in human history. An event so horrible that we must never forget it, and we have a duty to preserve the memory of that time so that future generations can understand, appreciate and most importantly, learn from it in the hopes that such events are never repeated.

Walking through the Japanese American Exclusion Memorial was a somber and sobering experience. This is a stark reminder of the dark history of this country, the repeat of mistakes made, and hope from some small pockets throughout this country. Take the time to visit this memorial and read the stories of the people who lived it, and whose lives were forever changed. I’ll post more from here and the rest of our adventures throughout the week.

After preparing the mixed Austro-Hungarian and German forces, Von Linsingen’s army was ready to make the main attack. Heading North-East out of the mountains, they would push towards Lemberg and would try to relieve the Fortress of Przemyśl to its west, which was under siege by the Russians. The commanders of the other two armies were instructed to support this plan. The relief of Przemyśl was a strategically important operation. The fortress had been under siege almost constantly since the start of the war(From the 17th of September 1914 until the 22th of March 1915). In the North, the campaign began well. The Austro-Hungarian Tenth Army reached Czernowitz and confronted the Russian Eighth Army under what was under command of General Alexei Brusilov. The Austro-Hungarians defeated the Russians on the 17th of February 1915 taking 60,000 enemy soldiers prisoner. The main attack was far worse then that as the Winter was not a good time to move the armies around Eastern Europe as the temperatures could reach -30 degrees Celsius, and so the Southern Army struggled to advance through the snowy Carpathian Mountains. After several weeks, the Fortress of Przemyśl still layed out of reach. Winteroffensive of 1915 Part 3.

May 22nd, 1941 - On this day in World War Two history, Luftwaffe attacks British fleet off Crete in history’s first major air-sea battle, sinking British light cruisers Gloucester and Fiji, and British destroyer Greyhound. Before the WW2 era, sea battles were fought on the seas and the seas alone, while land battles included troops, artillery, tanks later on (WW1) supported by aircraft (fighters and bombers). Fighters were originally meant to gain air superiority from another enemy Airforce so that bombers could drop payloads with limited enemy aerial interference. As time went on fighters became capable of assuming the role of fighter bomber and in modern times fighters are equipped with machine guns, cannons, and missiles. The Second World War introduced a new evolution in naval and air warfare. Now bombers and fighters regularly attacked naval warships, like today in WW2 history, and were able to inflict immense amounts of damage. Naval ships were very costly to make, and against comparatively cheap aircraft they often lost. The biggest battleship in the world, The Japanese Yamato, was destroyed by allied bombers, and the biggest British battleship, Prince of Wales, was also sunk by Japanese bombers earlier on in the war. And, perhaps the most famous battleships of the war and the prize ship of the Kriegsmarine, the Bismarck, was sunk by British torpedo bombers. Historically traditional roles of military beaches were beginning to overlap as a fleet once bound to the seas could now launch aircraft from carriers and seaborne land invasions from landing craft. (CONTINUED IN THE COMMENTS) —

May 22nd, 1945 - Heinrich Himmler, the Reichsführer of Hitler’s SS, is captured by British patrols near Hamburg. After being denounced by Hitler for attempting to save his own skin by personally negotiating with the allies (they would have none of it), he decided to escape and go into hiding. He attempted to flee under the false identity of Sergeant Heinrich Hitzinger. However, his real identity was soon discovered after questioning. Later during a medical evaluation at the headquarters of the Second British Army, a doctor attempted to open Himmler’s mouth, he refused to allow it and bit down on a hidden potassium cyanide capsule that he obtained from the SS. He was dead within 15 minutes and the Nazi war criminal was then buried in an unmarked grave which remains unknown to this day. Heinrich Himmler, the chicken farmer who rose up to be appointed by Hitler as commander of his formidable Schutzstaffel, can be considered one of the most evil and merciless Nazis of them all. He was directly responsible for pretty much all of the doings of the holocaust including the persecution and treatment towards those of Jewish descent – as well as the rest of Germany’s “undesirables”. He also oversaw the design and creation of the concentration camps and methods of killing such as the gas chambers with the help of his protégé, Reinhardt Heydrich (walking with Himmler in the first picture). Himmler also commanded Army Group Rhine in late 1944-early 1945 due to Hitler’s growing mistrust in his Field Marshals, but the army group was crushed due to Himmler’s lack of experience as a commander. Now at this point in May 1945 with Hitler, Himmler, Goebbels and Bormann all gone, only Goering and Hess remained alive as a top Nazi war criminals who were apart of Hitler’s most inner circle (Dönitz doesn’t count as he was not as much of a criminal as the rest of some of these guys). There is pretty much nothing positive to say about anything Himmler did during his career.
