2018 export figures for champagne were released yesterday. According to the Comité Champagne, last year's total turnover set a new record; close to €4.9 billion (+0.3% compared with 2017). Volumes are slightly lower (-1.8% to 301.9 million bottles) due to a decline in the French and UK markets. Australia remains a top export market, holding sixth position. Following significant growth over the past decade (+134%), Australia’s figures dipped slightly in 2018 to 8.4 million bottles (-1.8%), due to a less favourable exchange rate. . . .

Marl is a loosely used term to describe, in general, a calcareous kind of clay. But technically speaking, it’s calcium carbonate or lime-rich mudstone which contains variable amounts of clays and silt. Sand, on the other hand, is an airy soil comprised of tiny particles, formed from the crumbling of sandstone bedrock. Heavier marl soils nourish frost-resistant and late-budding meunier vines, heating up 15% more efficiently than dry soils like chalk, which is important for the rate of ripening and provides extra protection during periods of frost. Marls, together with sandy soils, offer good drainage yet with the ability to conserve water. These items of fascination came from a bottle of Collard-Picard Cuvée des Archives 2002, opened last weekend at our aptly themed champagne club meeting, ‘champagne curiosities’. They are reminiscent of a time long past, before invention of the muselet and capsule. Bottles of champagne were often sealed using an agrafe and / or string. A first look at @louisroederer_ Rosé 2013 which landed in Australia last month and has yet to make its way onto our shelves. 2013 was an unusually cool vintage for Champagne and it shows here; there is a pleasant lightness and delicacy to this wine that is gainfully youthful in appeal. On the nose, subtle notes of raspberry and watermelon freshness accompany a dusting of Roederer’s trademark white pepper notes (something I always get in their rosés). The palate reflects the delicacy of the vintage with its softer, elegant structure, crisp minerality and flavours of strawberry, blueberry and strawberry leaf. Execution is smooth and without interruption from tannins. Nice length. 🍾🥂 . . .

Another superb champagne club tasting today where the theme was ‘champagne curiosities’. All champagnes were indeed unusual and / or rare. A bracket of blanc de blancs, followed by cuvée de prestige, a mystery bottle and then still champagne wines. I loved the energy and power of @champagnecattier_officiel Clos du Moulin, only 17,000 bottles made. A blend of 50% C / 50% PN from a 2.2ha vineyard in Chigny-les-Roses, once owned by King Louis XV. A multi-vintage taken from 2005, 2006, and 2007. Also, the delicacy and elegance of 2002 @champagne_serveaux_fils cuvée de prestige comprising 70% C / 30% PN from Passy-sur-Marne. Such an enticing nose of melted butter, sugared almonds and white chocolate. The palate is clean yet slightly silky. Acidity is nicely integrated with the appearance of fruit and dosage, making for a harmonious wine. Lastly, 2004 Brice Bouzy Rouge Côteaux Champenois Grand Cru. Classic pinot noir from this part of Champagne. Loved the leather and forest floor on the nose. Intense flavours of berry compote and a fair whack of spice, soft tannins too. Elegant and wonderful length. 🍾🥂 An afternoon well spent. . . .

Vertus, a large premier cru village in the southernmost part of the Côte des Blancs, is home to well-known family-run producers such as Duval-Leroy, Vve Fourny and Larmandier-Bernier. With around 540 hectares under vine, Vertus is the second largest village in Champagne. There, on primarily east facing slopes of chalk, chardonnay thrives, as it does elsewhere in the Côte des Blancs. But the village produces some distinctly different styles. Getting to know @champagne_lallier today with the lovely @constance_dlr who is part of their winemaking team as well as brand ambassador. Lallier may be relatively new to Australia; but it’s worth getting to know. ▫️They are small producers based in the pinot noir kingdom of Aÿ, with around 15 hectares to their name. ▫️They only use pinot noir and chardonnay (no meunier). ▫️Grapes are sourced exclusively from grand and premier cru vineyards. ▫️For their Grand Rosé Brut, they unusually crush pinot noir and chardonnay before stacking them in layers on top of each other. Following macération, juices are bled off and fermented together. ▫️Their ‘R’ (Récolte) line includes a large percentage of a single vintage, with the remainder made up with reserves. In the case of the current R.014, the 2014 vintage constitues 84%. ▫️They use cultivated yeast taken from wild yeast unique to one of their vineyards. The natural sulphur it produces reduces or eliminates the need for added sulphur. Lallier’s wines are very good, defined by a clean streak and energetic drive; they are fresh, flavoursome and zesty. I had the privilege of tasting this lovely champagne at a friend’s birthday on the weekend. Cuvée Initiales 2008 is made by brother and sister duo, Nicolas and Clotilde, at Marc Chauvet in Rilly-la-Montagne. It’s their top of the line bottling, comprising 60% pinot noir and 40% chardonnay, around 5% aged in oak. No more than 5,200 bottles were produced, following eight years on lees. Not being overly familiar with the champagnes of Chauvet, I was surprised by its textural beauty. The elegance and femininity of chardonnay seems so refined here; delicate and lacey with lively finesse. It is effortlessly harmonious in balance and has excellent length. Quite a treat, and a nice discovery. . . .

Complex and gently oxidative with honeyed and grilled nut aromas complement its tropical fruit profile. Pierre Gimonnet’s style, finely honed and sharp, embraces the mood of the vintage here which was rich and generous, especially for chardonnay. Gimonnet’s Special Club 2012 offers a complex and expansive nose of riper and more exotic fruit, bell pepper, kumquat, hay and spice. The palate is round and mouth-filling, rich with succulent tropical fruits, cream and warm cinnamon bun, appearing even more prominent on account of its softer lemon acid structure. Every year on 22 January, the growers and Houses of Champagne celebrate the feast of St Vincent, a day of thanksgiving for the previous year’s harvest, and commit their efforts to the coming year. St Vincent, who is known as the patron saint of winegrowers, is believed to have died in January 304 following persecution by the Romans. This image overlooking Cramant, in Champagne’s Côte des Blancs, was taken on a particularly warm spring morning last April, during my last visit to Champagne. I toured a single parcel, owned by @louisroederer_, known as Les Bionnes. The site is known for its exemplary use of biodynamics, but more than this, it’s as close to permaculture as one can get in Champagne. Laid out across the land we inspected rows of vines, between them, soils recently ploughed by horse. A pond is close by with frogs and ducks…a beehive too. Permaculture is the practice of developing a sustainable and self-sufficient agricultural ecosystem. It is intensive but also extensive farming, the goal of which is to promote diversity and production from land. The theory works well in larger agricultural areas that can draw from many producer-owned inputs, but in Champagne, such diversity within a single and small ecosystem is not possible. Les Bionnes, and others like it, set a high bar for best practice standards across viticulture in Champagne. 🍾🥂 . . .

This one from @laherteaurelien brings me so much pleasure on a day like today. 100% meunier made three ways: 60% made as a white (including 40% reserve wine aged in barrel); 30% blended as a saignée; and 10% made as a still red wine. Partial malolactic fermentation. 2.5 g/L dosage. This off-beat rosé from Aurélien Laherte’s portfolio of ‘special and original cuvées’ offers boldness of character heightened by low dosage and elegant minerality. Sourced from old meunier vines located in Chavot, south of Epernay, Rosé de Meunier is flamboyantly characterful, revealing meunier in a way uncommonly seen. Think summer in Sardinia or on the Amalfi Coast and you’re almost there. With its bright orangey salmon hue, Aurelien’s complex assemblage speaks of Campari aperitifs on the terrace with its prominent rhubarb and vermouth infused aromatics. There’s plenty of fresh fruit too; strawberry, orange and crisp red apple. One of our favourite champagne experiences is the annual Le Printemps des Champagnes, also known as Champagne Week. The event has become a pilgrimage for wine professionals around the globe keen to explore the diversity of champagne with tastings of still wine and finished champagne. My TOP 9 champagnes from 2018, in no particular order. I cannot tell you how many bottles I tasted this year, but the quantity and diversity is vast; my biggest year of tasting to date. Visiting Champagne in April, kick-starting a new champagne club in Adelaide, becoming a finalist in the Vin de Champagne Awards, attending numerous tastings and events, and launching @vineandbubble, has provided me with many valuable opportunities to indulge my love for champagne but also educate my palate. The ones represented here stood out not only for their incredible quality and deliciousness, but because they accompanied some beautiful experiences with people I cherish and admire.
