Rediscovering some images taken by @tyson_stelzer of Tony Love and I last year. We were at Adelaide’s very first @tastechampevent which was a significant step in our city attracting more champagne events in the future. Despite Adelaide’s comparatively smaller population, there is an appetite for fine wine (and in particular, champagne) that is noticeable. People here possess impressively high wine IQs. Since moving back to Adelaide some 18 months ago, I’ve noticed increasing interest from champagne representatives in our city, many now adding it to their itineraries. For champagne lovers like me, it’s nice to see Adelaide on the map for champagne producers. . . .

Delicious dinner tonight with Laurence Alamanos, Export Manager for @champagne_ayala_official and the team from House of Fine Wine. Ayala is a house that flies under the radar, but their elegant chardonnay driven cuvées are very good and worth discovering if you haven’t done so already. I particularly admire their vintage blanc de blancs which, surprisingly, constitutes only 3% of total production. I find it beautifully textured yet feather light and vibrant. 🥂🍾 . . .

It has been a privilege to collaborate with my long-term champagne mentor, Jim Smith, on piecing together an article on the history of the Vin de Champagne Awards in Australia, a unique accolade that forms part of the Comité Champagne's worldwide promotional activities. Despite its 43 year history, very little is known about its origins. However, with a lot of detailed research undertaken by Jim, we’ve been able to establish a solid story. I very much enjoyed interviewing former Director of the Champagne Information Centre (now Champagne Bureau Australia), Holly Kerr (Forsyth), who was appointed to the role in 1979. The ensuing 22 years involved Holly organising and promoting the Award, during which time it became prestigious and fiercely contested with entries received from all over Australia. Interest was largely driven by increasingly discerning consumers after Holly opened the Award to include members of the general public, instead of just hospitality professionals. Holly’s stroke of genius, in making the Awards more accessible, was arguably the single most important factor in putting Australia on the map, and in the minds, of champagne producers in those early years. The article is an extensive piece and highlights the original sequence of events that have made the Awards what they are today. Our line-up from Sunday’s tasting which was all about blanc de blancs from the 2011 vintage (with one exception). All displayed merits of varying degrees but there were three that stood out. Agrapart Minéral Extra-Brut 2011: Remains one of my favourite Blanc de Blancs for its incredible purity and precision without sacrificing complexity. Its youthful nose was defined by slatey mineral notes, sea spray, bush pepper and raw cashews. On the palate, it appeared clean, precise and fresh yet with a delicate creaminess that tempered its zesty acidity. I loved its lemon wedge come saline mouth-watering appeal. Yum! Lovely long and dry length too. Larmandier-Bernier’s Terre de Vertus 2011: A highly refined champagne that appeared fresh and ripe. Aromas of pear tarte tatin, melted butter and caramel (as it opened in the glass). The palate was refined, elegant and delicate due, in part, to softer acidity and powder-fine chalkiness. Lastly, Pierre Peters Cuvée Speciale 'Les Chetillons' 2004 (which was added to the mix): Developing nose of salty-sweet appeal reminiscent of Turkish Delight, sea spray and toast. A full-bodied and vinous palate displayed cooked fruits and some spice. Nicely balanced. Ended with a long and delicious finish. This was an interesting comparison with its 2011 equivalent which I found a little reductive. @louisroederer_ Brut Premier has long been a favourite of mine, and when the 2013 base arrived a little over a year ago, it was nothing short of ecclesiastical to me. Two months ago I tasted their latest incarnation of Brut Premier with the 2014 base. It’s different to 2013; it’s softer for one thing, with a creamier and silkier texture. Bracket 1 - North and South of Vertus Bracket 2 - Vintages Bracket 3 - Rosé Our group of eager tasters were captivated by the wines; how pure, flavoursome and approachable they all were. Highlights from Larmandier-Bernier included the Terre de Vertus 2011 (one we tasted last year with Pierre Larmandier before its Aussie release). You would never know it was a zero dosage champagne for its ripeness and flavour. A thing of beauty; restrained and finely balanced. Their Rosé de Saignée was also a hit for its tension, vivacity and chalkiness, uncommon for a 100% pinot noir rosé. Vve Fourny’s Blanc de Blancs NV was an immediate pleaser for its creamy finesse, freshness and precision. It was particularly pleasing to hear that everyone was keen to go home and explore these champagnes further. A day well spent! . . .

This weekend we will host our very first VINE & BUBBLE tasting, profiling the village of Vertus, from Champagne’s chardonnay heartland; the Côte des Blancs. Last April we visited @manufourny and @larmandier.bernier to learn more about their champagnes and the terroir from which they derive their character. In the last 30 years, Champagne’s average temperature has increased by 1.2 ºC with a corresponding change in blossoming and harvest dates, moving forward by a fortnight. The Comité Champagne has stated that a small increase in temperature is in fact desirable if the increase is limited to around 2 ºC, but what happens if things are less than optimistic? Over the past two decades, a sustainable winegrowing/making strategy has become widely accepted by growers and producers as the region’s future; designed to preserve and enhance its unique terroir for the sake of the environment, heritage and quality of wine. It’s a topic that headlines the industry’s collective environmental agenda, spearheaded by the Comité Champagne, as part of the ‘Champagne Climate Change Plan’ launched in 2003 to reduce carbon emissions 75 percent by 2050. Under the plan, stakeholders are encouraged to make leaps in their journey toward environmental sustainability and achieve certification via the VDC (Viticulture Durable en Champagne) or France’s HVE (Haute Valeur Environmentale) certification. Further to this, in late 2018, the Presidents of the Union of Champagne Houses and Champagne Growers Union set two key objectives for the Champagne region: zero herbicide by 2025 and 100 percent of vineyards certified by 2030. Feeling a little spoiled from last night’s @champagne_bollinger soirée at @tastingaustralia in Adelaide. Superb, locally sourced produce prepared by chef extraordinaire, @simonbryantchef. Coffin bay oysters, abalone, pippis and shark (sustainable) were just some of the delicacies expertly matched to some of Bollinger’s best cuvées by @stockwine. La Grande Année 2007 was truly radiant on account of its depth, bright acidity and mineral tension. Its subtle oxidative aromas paired so well with the aged cheddar profiteroles. Fortunately, expectations are realised thanks to the capable hands of chef de cave, Jean-Baptiste Lecaillon, who declared it his ‘best Cristal to date’. Released in September 2018, Cristal 2008 represents a point of clarity in champagne seldom reached. Pale gold to the eye, the nose reveals a cleansing minerality of sea spray and wet chalk. There is a delicate complexity from yellow stone fruits, nuts and spice. On the palate, it is illusively light and expressively chalky sitting paradoxically with fruit intensity. The acidity is fine and softly integrated yet its unyielding saline streak keeps things focused. It also carries the lowest dosage in Cristal history, less than 8g/L. On the palate, there is less of Lanson’s classic malic tension with this richer and fuller style, leaning more toward ripe fruits, honey and creamy finesse than lemon zest and green apple. Marl is a loosely used term to describe, in general, a calcareous kind of clay. But technically speaking, it’s calcium carbonate or lime-rich mudstone which contains variable amounts of clays and silt. Sand, on the other hand, is an airy soil comprised of tiny particles, formed from the crumbling of sandstone bedrock. Heavier marl soils nourish frost-resistant and late-budding meunier vines, heating up 15% more efficiently than dry soils like chalk, which is important for the rate of ripening and provides extra protection during periods of frost. Marls, together with sandy soils, offer good drainage yet with the ability to conserve water.
