RDL’s (Romanian deadlift) Am amazing exercise to target the hamstrings. I use the RDL’s with Pt’s and classes I believe this is a great exercise to learn to hinge the hips. A lot of people are very quad dominant in there training programs. The RDL is a simple but effective exercise for the hamstrings. Keeping it basic to apply to your training. 1/ Feel shoulder width apart, squeeze bar tight. 2/ Break at the knees 3/ Shoulders up (shrug) 4/ Pull shoulders back (retract shoulder blades and squeeze) 5/ Hinge at the hips, 6/ Drive through heals, squeeze the glutes . . And repeat.

Life-Changing Fitness: Our gym family lost a beloved member somewhat suddendly to cancer over the weekend and I found out minutes before teaching my BodyPump class today. After 2 years of teaching, today was the first time I let myself fully cry in class.... I'm not talking about a small cry...I've had happy tears, tears of release and tears of passion while teaching, but today was that gut-wrenching ugly cry we often try to hold back in front of others. I was asked to share the news with the class before starting and to honor her as I saw fit. I reminded them of her positivity, her courageous presence and that if she was here she would want us to smash our workout. And that's exactly what we all did. Several times I felt my heart creeping into my throat especially delivering some layer 3 cues about "making every rep count, the tension making us stronger and pushing through to fatigue". I couldn't help but think about her ability to make every interaction count, her strong and fearless will and her fight to ultimate fatigue, but I held my deep sadness at bay until....."Bird Set Free" started to play for the cooldown. I know being free from cancer is not what the song is about but I visualized her taking flight....free....and peaceful in the lyrics. I barely choked the words out: "Here it comes, y'all....just follow me...." And you know what? They not only followed the stretches beautifully with barely any distinguishable cues......but they weeped with me. Our movement, the music and emotions were unified and had deep restorative meaning. My "Why" got bigger today.

I make it a little less bad for me by skipping the buttered bread 🤣 Cheese and other dairy is great for calcium, vitamins A and B, potassium and other cool stuff. It's been a difficult couple weeks for me physically which turned into emotional difficulty. I'm never one to Express much when I'm not feeling my best. I'm a "mind over matter" kind of person. But that gets me in trouble sometimes. For most of my adult life, I have dealt with sciatic nerve pain and/or piriformis syndrome (look it up, it's a pain in the ass, literally) caused by a lateral pelvic tilt (my hips are lop sided) and it occasionally flares up. I started going to a chiropractor about a year ago for it and have experienced great relief. But it doesn't make me immune to the occasional flare up. I've not had a flare up in probably 6 months, and not one this bad in probably 9 months. But when I do, the pain is awful to the point it becomes difficult to walk. But I force myself to push through. I guess I pushed through too much this time and didn't get to the chiropractor soon enough to catch it before it got really bad. So I've been on a rollercoaster of pain and emotions working through it. Sometimes I don't know what's worse, the physical pain, or the emotional toll it takes on me feeling like a fitness failure because my body can't get with the program sometimes. 😍The good news is, I am feeling 75% better so I'm seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and I know this will pass. I just have to keep reminding myself of that and continue to shake off the emotional effects of this. I also tried deep tissue Sports Massage and Trigger Point therapy for the first time on Friday with amazing results too. Bonus points for having a good excuse to get weekly deep tissue massages!
