Charnele is best known for her portrayal of Kim Reese, the pre-med student on the hit NBC sitcom A Different World. She was also one of the first Americans in the hit Broadway musical Sarafina, which was nominated for a Tony Award. She’s done numerous off-Broadway plays, as well as cabaret in New York City. She has also toured with the musical Heaven’s Child, The Emmet Till Story, with Regina Bell. Charnele’s film credits includes: Spike Lee’s Drop Squad, The Kangeroo, and Tendrils, which won 9 indie awards. She’s appeared on numerous hit sitcoms: Girlfriends, My Wife and Kids, Living Single, Oliver Beene, Martin. She’s also spearheaded an acting workshop at The Challenger Memorial Correctional Facility offering young adults an opportunity to develop skills and possibly another way out of gang life. Charnele has also assisted in creating an acting workshop at A Place Called Home. Lynn Sherr to moderate the discussion. She is an American broadcast journalist and author, best known as a correspondent for the ABC news magazine 20/20 and a long-time journalist for ABC. Lynn is a long time East End resident.

Diahann Carroll (/daɪˈæn/; born Carol Diahann Johnson, July 17, 1935) is an Americanactress, singer and model. She rose to stardom in performances in some of the earliest major studio films to feature black casts, including Carmen Jones in 1954 and Porgy and Bess in 1959. In 1962, Carroll won a Tony Award for best actress, a first for a black woman, for her role in the Broadway musical No Strings. Carroll got her big break at 18, when she appeared as a contestant on the Dumont Television Network program, Chance of a Lifetime, hosted by Dennis James. On the show which aired January 8, 1954, she took the $1,000 top prize for a rendition of the Jerome Kern/Oscar Hammerstein song, "Why Was I Born?" She went on to win the following four weeks. Engagements at Manhattan's Café Society and Latin Quarter nightclubs soon followed. Carroll's film debut was a supporting role in Carmen Jones (1954) as a wholesome country-bred rival to the sultry lead character played by Dorothy Dandridge. That same year, she starred in the Broadway musical, House of Flowers. In 1959, she played Clara in the film version of George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess,but her character's singing parts were dubbed by opera singer Loulie Jean Norman. She made a guest appearance in the series Peter Gunn, in the 1960 episode "Sing a Song of Murder". She starred with Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman, and Joanne Woodward in the 1961 film Paris Blues. In 1962, Carroll won the Tony Award for best actress (a first for a black woman) for the role of Barbara Woodruff in the Samuel A. Taylor and Richard Rodgersmusical No Strings. In 1974, she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for the film Claudine.

Christopher Paul Curtis is the author of nine books for young people including Bud, Not Buddy, The Mighty Miss Malone, Elijah of Buxton, The Watsons Go To Birmingham -1963 and Mr. Chickee’s Funny Money. In addition to being translated into 12 languages and selling more than seven million copies, his work has been performed as an off-Broadway musical with a score written by Motown legend Lamont Dozier, a motion picture directed by Tony award-winning director Kenny Leon and a world premiere commission presented at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. with music written by Terrence Blanchard. In 2000 Curtis became the first African-American male to be awarded the prestigious Newbery Medal. He is originally from Flint, Michigan where he worked for thirteen years at the historic Flint Fisher Body Number One automobile factory. His job was to hang doors on the largest Buicks, the Electra 225 and LeSabre. This has left him permanently adverse to entering large cars.
